Septic Tank Inspections & Maintenance

Inspected, serviced and kept compliant.

Keep your septic system working, and the council happy

Most rural homes in Rodney rely on a septic tank or an aerated treatment system. Looked after, you hardly know it’s there. Neglected, it means smells, blocked toilets and soggy, smelly ground over the disposal field.

Aqua Works inspects and services septic systems across Rodney and North Auckland. We check the whole system, give you a report for your records, and fix pumps, alarms, filters and blocked lines.

We don’t empty septic tanks. If your tank needs pumping out, we’ll tell you and can arrange it with a septic tank cleaning company.

We inspect and service septic systems. We don’t pump them out.

Inspection or service: what’s the difference?

They’re often done in the same visit, but they’re not the same thing.

Septic tank inspection

A check-up of the whole system. We look at the tank, the lids and the baffles, measure how much sludge and scum has built up, check the outlet filter, and walk the disposal field looking for ponding, smells or soggy ground. You get a report on what’s working, what needs attention, and when the tank will need pumping out. In Auckland, a septic tank needs an inspection at least every three years.

Septic system service

Hands-on maintenance. We clean the outlet filter, test the pumps, floats and high-level alarm, flush the irrigation lines and clear any blockages. Aerated treatment systems also get the blower and the treatment stages checked. In Auckland, aerated and other secondary systems need a service every six months.

Usually, one visit

For a septic tank, we do the inspection and a basic service together: check everything, clean the filter and write up the report. For an aerated system, each six-monthly service includes the checks the council needs.

Pump-outs

When the sludge and scum fill half the tank, it needs pumping out. We don’t empty septic tanks. If your tank needs pumping out, we’ll tell you and can arrange it with a septic tank cleaning company. A pump-out on its own isn’t enough for Auckland Council: it wants a record that the whole system was checked.

Repairs

Failed pumps and alarms, cracked lids, and blocked or broken pipes between the house and the tank. Our plumbers and licensed drainlayers fix them. See drain unblocking.

Close to your water supply?

If your bore or water tank is close to the septic system, or the system has overflowed, get your drinking water tested. See water testing.

Sludge and scum measured.

Outlet filter checked and cleaned.

Pumps, floats and alarm tested.

A report and a reminder when due.

A copy for your records.

A price for any repair.

The pipes: the lines in and out of the tank, where blockages and breaks happen.

Broken sewer pipe bend dug up in wet ground

Repairs: a broken bend in the sewer line at a home on a septic tank, found and replaced.

Auckland Council’s septic rules

The Auckland Unitary Plan says on-site wastewater systems must be maintained by a suitably qualified service provider:

  • Septic tanks and their disposal fields inspected at least every three years.
  • Tanks pumped out when sludge and scum fill half the tank.
  • Aerated and other secondary systems serviced every six months.
  • Outlet filters serviced as the manufacturer recommends.
  • A record of each visit kept, ready for the council.

The council is following up owners who haven’t sent in records. You get a copy of our report for your records, and we can send a copy to the council for you.

Buying a home with a septic system?

Ask the seller for the septic records. In Auckland, the owner has to keep a record of every inspection and service, and the council can note a system that isn’t compliant on the property’s LIM. If there are no recent records, book an inspection before you buy. See buying or renting out a rural property.

Mangawhai and Kaiwaka

Kaipara District Council has its own rules for septic systems in residential areas and near the coast and harbours. We can fix pumps, alarms, filters and blocked lines anywhere in our area. Call us to talk about what applies to your property.

How often?

  • Septic tank: an inspection at least every three years in Auckland, with the sludge level checked.
  • Pump-out: when sludge and scum fill half the tank. For many homes that’s every three to five years.
  • Aerated system: a service every six months in Auckland.
  • Outlet filter: as often as the manufacturer recommends, and at every visit.

A bigger household or a smaller tank fills faster.

An alarm in Mangawhai Heads

An emergency call-out to a home in Mangawhai Heads: the owners thought the septic filter was blocked. The filter was clear. The real problem was the pump, which had shorted out, so the tank had filled right up to the lid.

That’s why we check the whole system, not just the part that looks broken.

Septic tank FAQs

What’s the difference between a septic inspection and a service?

An inspection is a check-up: we look at the tank, measure the sludge and scum, check the outlet filter and the disposal field, and report what needs doing. A service is the hands-on maintenance: cleaning the filter, testing pumps and alarms, flushing lines and clearing blockages. For most septic tanks we do both in one visit.

How often does my septic tank need an inspection?

In Auckland, a septic tank and its disposal field need an inspection at least every three years, and aerated or other secondary systems need a service every six months. Kaipara District Council has its own rules.

Do you pump out septic tanks?

We don’t empty septic tanks. If your tank needs pumping out, we’ll tell you and can arrange it with a septic tank cleaning company.

How do I know if my tank needs pumping out?

We measure the sludge and scum in the tank. When they fill half the tank, it needs pumping out. For many homes that’s every three to five years, depending on the size of the tank and how many people live there.

Does a pump-out count as my council inspection?

Not in Auckland. The council wants a record that the whole system was checked, not just a pump-out invoice.

Do you send the report to the council?

You get a copy of our report for your records, and we can send a copy to Auckland Council for you. We also remind you when your next inspection or service is due.

What shouldn’t go into a septic system?

Wipes, nappies and sanitary products, fat, oil and food scraps, strong bleach and antibacterial cleaners, medicines, paint and chemicals, and roof water or stormwater.

My septic alarm is going off. What should I do?

Use as little water as you can, and call us. The alarm usually means the pump has stopped or the level is too high. After hours, please call 021 278 7427. Don’t text or email: calling is the only way to get an emergency call-out.

Do you service aerated wastewater systems?

Yes. If your system is still under warranty, check whether the manufacturer needs its own agent to service it.

How much does a septic inspection cost?

We charge a set price for a standard inspection and written report, plus travel. Repairs and parts are extra, and a pump-out is charged by the septic tank cleaning company. Call us on 0800 278 296 for today’s rates.

What areas do you cover?

Rodney and North Auckland, from Mangawhai to Albany, including Warkworth, Matakana, Wellsford, Orewa and the Hibiscus Coast. For bigger jobs further away, give us a call.
