If you’re on a council or Watercare supply, your water has been treated and tested before it reaches you. It’s safe to drink. But what keeps it safe in the pipes is also what many people don’t like about it.
A small amount of chlorine stays in the water all the way to your tap, so you can taste and smell it, and some people find it dries their skin. Fluoride is added to some supplies, including Auckland. In Warkworth, Snells Beach and Algies Bay, high silica leaves white spots on glass, showers and taps. And in some homes, old pipes and fittings can add lead.

Is town water safe to drink?
Yes. Council and Watercare water is treated and tested to meet New Zealand’s drinking water standards. Filtering it is about taste, smell, skin, water spots and choosing what’s in the water you drink.
Do I need a whole house filter or an under bench filter?
A whole house filter treats every tap, including the shower. An under bench filter treats the water at your kitchen tap. Many homes have both: a whole house filter for chlorine and an under bench filter for drinking water.
Will a filter remove the chlorine taste and smell?
Yes. Carbon filtration takes out the chlorine taste and smell. A whole house filter does it at every tap, and an under bench filter does it at the kitchen tap.
Can I remove fluoride from town water?
Yes. A reverse osmosis system under your kitchen bench removes up to 98% of fluoride from your drinking water.
What causes the white spots on my shower glass?
In Warkworth, Snells Beach and Algies Bay, it’s usually silica in the mains water. A whole house ioniser reduces the spotting from silica and calcium at every tap.
Do I need a UV filter on town water?
Not usually. Town water is already disinfected at the treatment plant. UV filters are for untreated tank, bore and stream water.
How often does my filter need servicing?
Most mains water filters have their cartridges changed every 12 months, and one of our under bench cartridges lasts two years. We run a reminder service for every customer, so we’ll let you know when yours is due.
