Filtered town water at every tap, with an ioniser
Town water is treated to be safe to drink, but it isn’t always pleasant. Chlorine can leave a taste and smell. In some areas the water also carries a lot of silica or calcium, which dries as white spots on shower glass, taps, tiles and cars.
Our Whole House Ioniser System fits on the water supply into your home, so every tap, shower and appliance gets filtered water. It has four stages: a sediment filter, then carbon and KDF-55 media in one cartridge, then a stainless steel ioniser on the outlet.
The ioniser doesn’t take silica or calcium out of the water, and your water will test the same afterwards. What our customers tell us is that they get far fewer spots. The water runs off the glass instead of drying on it, and the spots that do form wipe off easily.
Made for town water supplies.

What our customers tell us
We’ve installed hundreds of these systems. These figures come from our customers: it’s what they’ve seen in their own homes and the feedback they’ve given us. They aren’t scientifically proven, just what our customers have experienced.
Up to 70%
fewer silica spots in Warkworth
Warkworth’s town water is high in silica. We’ve installed well over 100 of these systems in Warkworth alone.
Up to 80%
fewer water spots in Snells Beach and Algies Bay
The town water here carries silica but very little calcium.
Up to 95%
fewer calcium spots
Calcium spotting responds best. That’s mostly what you’ll find in Orewa, Silverdale, Millwater and Milldale, where there’s little silica.
The whole house system for Orewa, Silverdale, Millwater and Milldale
Water spotting is less of a problem in Orewa, Hatfields Beach, Silverdale, Millwater and Milldale, and some people there aren’t worried about it. For them, we install the exact same system without the ioniser.
You get the same housings and the same sediment and carbon/KDF-55 filters, so the chlorine taste and smell is still reduced at every tap. It costs a lot less, so it’s the cost-effective choice if spotting doesn’t bother you. See the Whole House Filter System in our shop, or ask us about it at your free onsite visit.
Why choose a whole house ioniser?
Around Warkworth, Snells Beach and Algies Bay, the town water has come from deep bores since late 2018, and it carries more silica than it used to. In Orewa, Silverdale, Millwater and Milldale there’s little silica, so spotting there is usually from calcium. Either way, you get white marks on glass, tiles and tapware that are hard to clean off. Read more about silica in water.
The filters also do useful work on their own. The carbon reduces the chlorine taste and smell at every tap, not just the kitchen, and the KDF-55 media reduces some dissolved metals. Read more about chlorine in water.
How the ioniser works
The ioniser is a stainless steel unit with rare earth magnets inside. As the water flows through, the magnetic field acts on the minerals in it. The minerals stay in the water and it will still test the same.
What changes, our customers tell us, is how the water behaves. It doesn’t stick to the glass the same way, so it runs off instead of drying into spots. They see far fewer spots in the first place, and the ones that do form wipe off easily.
Magnetic water treatment isn’t new, and the science on it is still divided. Some studies show a benefit and others don’t. That’s why we did our own field testing (see below) and why we back it with a money-back guarantee.
How long before I notice a difference?
In newer homes, most people notice within 2 to 4 weeks. In older homes with existing build-up in the pipes, it can take up to 3 months.

Outdoor installs in Warkworth
When there’s no good spot inside, we fit the system outside where the water comes in, then cover it to keep the sun off the filter housings.
Warkworth, installed: on the outside wall of a home that was being renovated.
Warkworth, covered: the same system with its galvanised cover fitted.
Warkworth, on posts: an upgrade with no good wall space, so we concreted two posts in near the water meter, hung the system on them and covered it.
Garage installs
Inside, we mount the system on a board where the water enters the house, with a service record next to it.
Snells Beach: mounted on a board beside the garage door, where the town water comes in.
Algies Bay: water in on one side, filtered water out through the ioniser on the other.
Orewa: the sediment filter, the carbon and KDF filter, then the stainless steel ioniser on the outlet.
Why we install this system
We’ve lived and worked in this area for over 25 years, putting in whole house filters. In that time we’ve tested every whole house filtration system we could find on the market. We haven’t found anything that reduces silica spotting as well as this one.
About eight or nine years ago, we helped develop it. We put different systems on ten local homes, tested each one, then swapped them around while we tried different ionisers, different magnets and different spacing between the magnets. When one clearly worked better than the rest, we field tested it for about two more years before we were happy with it.
It’s still the system we install today. When a new product comes on the market, we test it against ours, and so far nothing has beaten it. If we found something better, we’d be installing that instead.
Why silica is so hard to remove
Calcium, magnesium, iron and manganese dissolve in water as positively charged ions. A water softener swaps them for sodium, which is why softeners work on hardness.
Silica is different. At normal tap water pH it’s dissolved mostly as silicic acid, which carries almost no charge. It only turns into a negatively charged ion at a very high pH. So a softener can’t catch it.
Taking silica out of all the water in a house needs reverse osmosis, or a special resin that’s regenerated with caustic soda (sodium hydroxide). Whole house reverse osmosis costs too much for a normal home. The caustic soda systems make strong chemical waste that shouldn’t go down a household drain, and the treated water can come out with a very high pH. Neither is practical for a home, which is why we use the ioniser. For drinking water, a reverse osmosis system at the kitchen tap does remove silica.
How we install your whole house ioniser
Every job follows the same four steps.
1
Free site visit
We look at your water supply, your water pressure and where the system can go.
It needs about 600 x 600 mm of wall space near where the water enters the house.
2
Check the pressure
The system is rated to 80 PSI. If your water pressure is higher than 550 kPa, we fit a pressure limiting valve first.
3
Install
Our own registered plumbers fit the system on your supply and check it before they leave.
Outside, we add a cover to keep the sun off the housings.
4
Service every year
We change both filters, check the ioniser and housings, and remind you when it’s due.

Whole house ioniser FAQs
What is a whole house ioniser?
It’s a whole house water filter with an ioniser on the outlet. Water goes through a sediment filter, then a cartridge of carbon and KDF-55 media, then a stainless steel ioniser with rare earth magnets inside. It’s fitted where the town water enters your home, so every tap gets the benefit.
Does an ioniser remove silica or calcium?
No. The minerals stay in the water and it will still test the same. What our customers tell us is that they get far fewer spots: up to 70% fewer silica spots in Warkworth, up to 80% fewer in Snells Beach and Algies Bay, and up to 95% fewer calcium spots. The water runs off the glass instead of drying on it. These figures are what our customers have seen in their own homes, not scientific test results. If you want minerals removed from your drinking water, a reverse osmosis system does that at the kitchen tap.
Why can’t a water softener remove silica?
A softener only swaps out positively charged ions like calcium and magnesium. Silica in tap water is mostly uncharged silicic acid, so it goes straight through. Removing it from the whole house would take reverse osmosis or a caustic soda resin system, which aren’t practical for a home. Read more about silica in water.
Is this the same as an alkaline water ioniser?
No. Alkaline water ionisers are electric benchtop units that change the pH of drinking water. Our whole house ioniser doesn’t use power and isn’t designed to change the pH or make alkaline water. It’s a filter system with an ioniser for the whole house. Read more in our article on alkaline water and water ionisers.
Will a whole house ioniser soften my water?
No. It isn’t a water softener and it doesn’t use salt, so your water’s hardness stays the same on a water test. For hard bore water, or water with iron and manganese, a water softener is the right tool.
Which size do I need?
About 9 in 10 homes suit our standard 10-inch system. For homes with three or more bathrooms that are used regularly, we fit the Jumbo version. The ioniser is the same, but the bigger filters give the water more contact time with the carbon, so it still reduces the chlorine when more water is flowing.
Does it work on tank or bore water?
It’s made for town water. Tank and bore water need different treatment, usually UV to make it safe to drink, so we design a system around your water. See our whole house water filters.
How long does it take to work?
In newer homes, most people notice a difference within 2 to 4 weeks. In older homes with build-up already in the pipes, it can take up to 3 months.
Does it make my water safe to drink?
Town water is already treated to be safe to drink. This system improves the taste and smell and reduces spotting. It doesn’t disinfect water, and it isn’t designed to remove fluoride, nitrate or PFAS. For those, ask us about reverse osmosis.
Does a whole house ioniser need power or salt?
No. The ioniser uses magnets and the filters work on water pressure, so there’s nothing to plug in and no salt to top up.
How often does it need servicing?
Once a year. We replace the sediment filter and the carbon/KDF filter, check the ioniser, housings and pressure, and remind you when it’s due.
What warranty do I get?
The ioniser has a 5-year warranty and the filter housings have 24 months, as long as our registered plumbers install it and it’s serviced every year.
How much does a whole house ioniser cost?
You’ll find the current price of the system in our online shop. Installation depends on your site, so we’ll give you a quote after a free onsite visit.
Is there a money-back guarantee?
Yes. If you’re not happy with the system after 3 months, we’ll take it out and refund you in full, less the cost of the filters. Some people think an ioniser sounds too good to be true, and there’s no solid science behind it yet. What we know comes from our own field testing and from our customers. We’ve installed hundreds of these systems, and we’re happy to back them.
