UV Water Filters for Tank and Bore Water

Safe drinking water at every tap.

UV water filters for NZ homes

A UV water filter kills bacteria, viruses and parasites such as E. coli and Giardia as the water flows past a UV lamp. It uses no chemicals and doesn’t change the taste. It’s the simplest way to make tank, bore and spring water safe to drink at every tap in your home.

We supply, install and service UV water filter systems for homes, baches, lifestyle blocks and businesses across Rodney and North Auckland, from Mangawhai to Albany.

Every system has sediment filters to protect the UV, is sized to your home and your water, and gets a service every 12 months.

UV for tank, bore and spring water

Every supply is different. Here’s what we usually fit on each one.

Tank water

Rainwater

Rain washes bird droppings, leaves and dirt off the roof into your tank. Sediment filters and a UV filter protect every tap. If your roof or spouting adds metals such as copper, we add stages for that too. Find out which roofs cause the most problems.

Bore water

Groundwater

We always test bore water first. Iron, manganese and hardness coat the UV sleeve and block the light, so we treat them first, usually with a water softener. Then the UV protects every tap.

Springs, streams and shared supplies

Surface water

Surface water carries more dirt and bugs, so it needs good filtration before the UV. If you supply water to other people, such as a café, school or campground, you may need validated commercial UV.

What does a UV water filter cost?

The price of a UV water filter system depends on four things:

  • the size of the system, which depends on how many bathrooms you have
  • the filters your water needs before the UV, and a water softener if your bore water has iron or hardness
  • the installation: where the system goes, power, pipework and your water pump
  • whether it needs a cover to protect it outside

You’ll find current prices for the Aqua Mini, Aqua BIG and Aqua JUMBO in our online shop. Installation depends on your plumbing, so after a free site visit we give you a clear quote before we start.

UV water filter FAQs

What does a UV water filter remove?

A UV water filter kills or inactivates bacteria, viruses and parasites, such as E. coli, Giardia and Cryptosporidium. It doesn’t remove dirt, chemicals, metals or tastes, so we fit sediment filters before the UV, and other treatment if your water needs it.

Do I need a UV filter on tank water?

Yes, if you drink it. Rain washes bird and possum droppings, insects and dirt off the roof into the tank, and bacteria such as E. coli can follow. Sediment filters and a UV filter protect every tap in the house.

Does a UV water filter work on bore water?

Yes, once the water is clear enough for the UV light to get through. We test bore water first. Iron, manganese and hardness coat the quartz sleeve, so we treat them first, usually with a water softener. Find out more about iron and manganese in water.

What size UV water filter do I need?

It depends on your peak flow, which mostly comes down to how many bathrooms you have. The Aqua Mini suits tiny houses, cabins and small baches, the Aqua BIG suits homes with 1 to 2 bathrooms, and the Aqua JUMBO suits 3 to 5 bathrooms and light commercial use. We check your pump and flow at the free site visit.

How much does a UV water filter cost?

You’ll find current prices for the Aqua Mini, Aqua BIG and Aqua JUMBO in our online shop. Installation depends on your plumbing, power and pump, so after a free site visit we give you a clear quote.

How often does a UV water filter need servicing?

Every 12 months. The lamp loses strength long before it looks dim, so we fit a new lamp, clean or replace the quartz sleeve and change the filters. We remind you when it’s due. Find out more about our UV water filter service.

Do UV water filters affect water pressure?

No. When it’s sized correctly for your flow, a UV system keeps normal household pressure. Pressure drops as the filter cartridges fill with dirt, which means they’re due for a change.

What happens to a UV water filter in a power cut?

A UV system needs power to work. During a power cut the water isn’t being treated, so don’t drink it until the UV system is back on.

My UV system is beeping or has stopped working. What should I do?

Our guides explain the common causes: why a UV system beeps, what to check if your UV filter stops working and what a UV alarm means. In Rodney or North Auckland, call us on 0800 278 296 and we’ll come and fix it.

Can Aqua Works add UV to the water system in an existing house?

Yes. We often add UV to an existing filter system, and upgrade the water pump at the same time if it needs it.

Which UV water filter brands does Aqua Works install and service?

We install and service Aqua Works, Hallett, Bug Buster, Alpine Pure, Davey, Puretec, Microlene, Wyckomar, Viqua and Atlas systems, and we service most other makes too.

Does a business need a validated UV system?

Under the Self-supplied Buildings Acceptable Solution, a building used by more than 25 people, or open to the public or used for a community purpose, needs validated UV. Find out more about commercial UV water filters.

Where does Aqua Works install and service UV water filters?

Across Rodney and North Auckland, from Mangawhai to Albany, including Warkworth, Matakana, the Hibiscus Coast and Dairy Flat. Find out more about UV servicing in Warkworth, Matakana, Omaha, Mangawhai, Dairy Flat and Helensville and Kaukapakapa.
