Water Filter and Softener Servicing
Softeners, neutralisers, filters and cartridges.
We remind you when it’s due.
Why water treatment needs servicing
Every water treatment system needs looking after. Filters fill up with dirt, carbon gets used up, softener resin wears out and neutraliser media dissolves as it works. A system that hasn’t been serviced slowly stops doing its job, usually without you noticing.
Most systems need a water filter service every 12 months. Some, like pH neutralisers and filters on busy commercial sites, need checking every 6 months.
We service water softeners, pH neutralisers, cartridge filters, media filters, UV systems and ozone systems across Rodney and North Auckland, from Mangawhai to Albany. We service most makes and models, whoever installed them, and we remind you when your next service is due.

What’s in each service
Water softeners: every 12 months
We check all the settings on the control head and make sure it’s working properly, then run the softener through a full regeneration cycle. We check the salt tank: that the softener is using salt, that the salt hasn’t formed a hard crust (a salt bridge), that the float works, and that brine is drawn out and the tank refills. If the salt needs it, we empty it out and start again.
Softener resin wears out. Every four to five years we do a full service and replace the resin inside the softener. See water softeners.
pH neutralisers: every 6 to 12 months
We take the head off, measure how much calcite is left, break up any media that’s starting to go lumpy, and top it up. A manual neutraliser also needs backwashing every two to four weeks; an automatic one does that itself. See acidic water and pH neutralisers.
Filters and cartridges: every 6 to 12 months
Sediment, carbon and KDF cartridges are replaced every 6 to 12 months, depending on your water and how much you use. Most of our whole house and under-bench cartridges are changed every 12 months, and one of our under-bench cartridges lasts two years. Busy commercial sites need them more often.
Media filters
Some bigger systems use large media filter tanks instead of cartridges. Multimedia filters have layers of sand, anthracite and garnet that trap sediment. Other media, such as Birm and greensand, take out iron and manganese. We service them all: we check the control head settings and the backwash, and replace the media when it’s worn out.
Ozone tank treatment
The UV lamp inside the ozone unit is replaced every 18 months. The filter in the tank needs a quick monthly clean: pull it out, hose it off and put it back. Most homeowners do that themselves. See ozone tank water treatment.
UV systems: every 12 months
A new lamp, a clean quartz sleeve and new filters. See UV water filter servicing.

Recent service jobs
A few of the systems we look after.
Warkworth: a resin change on a large softener. The old resin was fouled with iron and well past its use-by date. New resin is a clean golden colour.
Sandspit: a new Ecosoft softener with its salt tank, filter and pressure tank. It gets a full service every 12 months.
Coatesville: a multimedia filter, twin filters and a UV system under the house. We check the media filter every six months.
Our reminder service
We keep a record of every system we look after. When your service is due, we get in touch by phone, text or email, whichever suits you best, and book a time that works for you. You never have to remember when the cartridges are due or when the softener resin needs replacing.
Some of our commercial customers, like cafés, restaurants and sites running several units, have us visit every month. We top up the softener salt and check everything is working, so their water is always good and always on.
How often does each system need a service?
- Water softeners: a full service every 12 months, and new resin every 4 to 5 years.
- pH neutralisers: checked and topped up every 6 to 12 months. A manual neutraliser needs backwashing every 2 to 4 weeks.
- Cartridge filters: new cartridges every 6 to 12 months. One of our under-bench cartridges lasts 2 years.
- Media filters: checked every 6 to 12 months, with new media when it’s worn out.
- UV systems: a new lamp and a clean quartz sleeve every 12 months.
- Ozone tank treatment: a new UV lamp in the ozone unit every 18 months, and the tank filter hosed off every month.
Busy commercial sites need more frequent checks. Cafés, restaurants and sites with several units often have us visit every month.
Any make or model
We service most makes and models of softeners, neutralisers, filters and UV systems, including systems someone else installed.
If yours hasn’t been serviced for a while, we’ll check it over, tell you what it needs and get it working properly again. If it’s worn out, we’ll tell you honestly and give you a clear quote to replace it before we do any work.
For businesses
Cafés, schools, ECE centres, camps and other businesses on their own water supply need their treatment kept in good order, with records to show it.
If your business follows the Acceptable Solution for self-supplied buildings, your treatment must be maintained to the manufacturer’s instructions, and you need to keep maintenance records for at least three years.
We service on a schedule that suits your site, from monthly visits for cafés and restaurants to yearly services, keep a record of every visit and can help with your water safety plan. See commercial water treatment.

Repairs and upgrades
If something is leaking, worn or broken, we’ll fix it while we’re there or quote it for you. If your water has changed, we can test it and suggest an upgrade. No water at all? Call our emergency call-out team.
Water treatment servicing FAQs
How often should a water softener be serviced?
Every 12 months. We check the control head settings, run a full regeneration cycle and check the salt tank, the float, the salt use and the brine draw and refill. The resin inside is replaced every four to five years.
How do I know if my water softener isn’t working?
White scale on taps and glass, or orange stains from iron, start coming back. The salt level stops going down, or a hard crust forms on top of the salt. If you notice any of these, call us.
What is a salt bridge?
A hard crust of salt that forms in the salt tank, with a hollow space underneath. The tank looks full, but the water can’t reach the salt, so the softener can’t make brine and stops softening. We check for it at every service.
What salt should I use in my softener?
Water treatment salt or swimming pool salt. Most customers top it up about once a month. See water softeners.
How often do water filter cartridges need replacing?
Every 6 to 12 months, depending on your water and how much you use. Most of our whole house and under-bench cartridges are changed every 12 months, and one under-bench cartridge lasts two years. Busy commercial sites need them more often.
What happens if I don’t change my filters?
They fill up with dirt, so your water pressure drops. Carbon cartridges stop taking out the chlorine taste and smell once they’re used up, and old carbon can become a place for bacteria to grow.
How often does a pH neutraliser need servicing?
We check and refill the calcite every 6 to 12 months. A manual neutraliser also needs backwashing every two to four weeks; an automatic one does it itself. See acidic water.
Do you service systems you didn’t install?
Yes. We service most makes and models of softeners, neutralisers, filters and UV systems, whoever installed them.
Do you send service reminders?
Yes. We keep a record of every system we look after and get in touch when its service is due, by phone, text or email, whichever suits you best.
Do you service businesses?
Yes. We service cafés, restaurants, schools, ECE centres, camps and other businesses on a schedule that suits the site, from monthly visits to yearly services, and keep a record of every visit. See commercial water treatment.
How much does a service cost?
It depends on your system and what needs replacing. Call us on 0800 278 296 and we’ll tell you before we book it in.
