Never get caught short on tank water

If your home runs on rainwater, the tank is your water supply. Most people only find out it’s low when the pump starts sucking air or the taps splutter, usually in the middle of a dry summer.

A water tank level indicator (also called a tank gauge or tank level monitor) shows you how much water is left. You can cut back early, book a water delivery in good time, and spot a leak before it drains the tank.

Some gauges are simple dials you read at the tank. Others send the level to a display in your house or an app on your phone, with alarms when the level drops. We supply and install them, and we’ll help you choose the one that suits your tank and your property.

Know your level. Plan your water.

Why fit a water tank gauge?

Tank water in Rodney and North Auckland is seasonal. A tank that’s full in winter can run low surprisingly quickly over a dry summer, especially with visitors to stay, a garden to water or stock to look after.

Spot leaks early

A sudden drop in the level often means a leak, a burst pipe, a broken trough or a tap left running. Remote monitors with a rapid change alarm warn you straight away, before the tank is empty.

Plan your water deliveries

When you can see the level on your phone, you can order water before you run out, not after. Your water carrier can even keep an eye on it for you (see below).

Protect your pump

A pump that keeps running when the tank is empty can be damaged. A Smart Water pump controller turns the pump on and off based on the tank level, and stops it if there’s no water to pump.

Which tank gauge is right for you?

Got a concrete tank, or a tank with a domed or sloping roof? Most gauges still fit. We’ll check your tank and the Wi-Fi or mobile signal at the tank before we recommend one.

Tank monitors and your water carrier

If you rely on water deliveries over summer, a remote tank monitor makes life easier for you and your water carrier.

With a HiLo 4G monitor, you can invite other people into your HiLo account, so they see your tank level and alerts too. Share it with your water carrier and they can see when your tank is getting low and get water to you before you run dry, without you having to remember to call.

Around Warkworth, Matakana, Leigh, Omaha, Sandspit, Point Wells, Kaipara Flats and Tāwharanui, we work closely with Matakana Water. Talk to them about keeping your tank topped up.

How we install a tank level indicator

Every tank is different, so every install follows the same four steps.

1

Check your tank

We look at your tank: plastic or concrete, its height and the shape of the roof.

We also check the Wi-Fi or mobile signal at the tank.

2

Recommend the right gauge

We recommend the gauge that suits your tank, your property and how you want to see the level: at the tank, in the house or on your phone.

3

Install it properly

We fit it in the right spot, clear of pipes and ball cocks.

That includes diamond core drilling on concrete tanks and levelling on sloping roofs.

4

Set up and test

We set up the app and alarms on your phone, and for anyone else who needs them.

Then we check the first readings before we leave.

Professional installation

Our team installs tank level indicators across Rodney and North Auckland, from Mangawhai to Albany. We fit Blue Mountain, Smart Water and HiLo gauges.

  • The right gauge for your tank, your Wi-Fi and your mobile coverage.
  • Neat, weatherproof installation on plastic and concrete tanks.
  • Apps and alarms set up on your phone before we leave.
  • Easy to add when we install a new water tank, or service your UV system or pump.

Part of a complete rainwater system

A tank gauge is one part of a good rainwater harvesting system, along with first flush diverters, pre-tank filters, a reliable pump and UV treatment. We design, install and service the lot.

Water tank level indicator FAQs

What is a water tank level indicator?

A device that shows how much water is in your tank. Simple ones are a float and dial you read at the tank. Smart ones measure the level with a pressure sensor or radar and send it to a display in your house or an app on your phone, with alarms when the level drops.

How accurate are tank level indicators?

Radar monitors are very accurate: HiLo quotes 0.2%. Smart Water uses a high-accuracy stainless steel pressure sensor in the tank. A mechanical float gauge gives a good reading at a glance.

Do I need Wi-Fi at my tank?

Not always. The HiLo 4G monitor uses the mobile network, and the Blue Mountain float gauge sends readings over Sigfox. Smart Water sends readings by long-range radio to a display in your house, which connects to your Wi-Fi for the app. The HiLo WiFi model needs your Wi-Fi to reach the tank.

Is there an ongoing cost?

For some. The HiLo 4G monitor needs an annual HiLo subscription, which covers the mobile network. The Blue Mountain Sigfox gauge comes with the first year’s subscription included. The HiLo WiFi monitor has no annual fee, the Smart Water app is free, and the simple Blue Mountain gauge has no subscription.

Can one system monitor several tanks?

Yes. Smart Water covers up to 12 tanks and 12 pumps on one system. With HiLo, each tank has its own monitor and you see them all in the app.

Will a tank gauge fit my concrete tank?

Yes. We fit gauges to plastic and concrete tanks, above and below ground. On concrete tanks we diamond core drill the hole, and level the monitor with shims where the roof slopes.

Can my water carrier see my tank level?

With a HiLo 4G monitor, yes. You can invite your water carrier into your HiLo account, so they can see when your tank is getting low.

Can a tank gauge control my pump?

A Smart Water pump controller can. It turns the pump on and off based on the tank level, and stops it if there’s no water to pump.

How much does a water tank level indicator cost?

It depends on the gauge, your tank and the installation. Prices for each gauge are in our online shop, and we’ll give you an installed price for your property. Call us on 0800 278 296.
