Ozone water treatment – How does it work?
How does ozone purify water?
Ozone is oxygen (O) with three atoms (O3) instead of two atoms (O2). Therefore, it consists of three oxygen atoms, “O3”, with a high oxidation potential. In chemistry, this property means that the gas is particularly “reactive”. This is because its third atom “steals” an oxygen atom from everything that comes into contact with ozone. Thus, ozone is one of the strongest oxidants of all and is used in water treatment worldwide.
Since it is not water-soluble, ozone reacts with the pollutants in the water. This process is called ozonation. The oxidation process destroys unwanted contaminants such as viruses, bacteria or other pathogens by causing the disintegration of their cell membrane.
Ozone binds toxic components
Although its oxidative properties are powerful, the lifetime of ozone is very short. As soon as it comes into contact with viruses, bacteria, odours, these are destroyed by the extra oxygen atom in the ozone! During ozone water treatment, the cellular components of the bacterial cell walls of all harmful substances in the environment are oxidised. As soon as the ozone has reached the individual cells, it oxidises all components – what remains is pure oxygen.
In addition, ozone disinfection has clear advantages over the conventional and frequently used chlorine disinfection of water. In addition, this type of water disinfection also decomposes other substances that react with oxygen. These include all human substances, organic substances, pesticides, cyanides, phenols, or even gases such as hydrogen sulphide.
AquaZone Ozone System
AquaZone Ozone System is a two-component water treatment system. The first module is the water ozone generator with an integrated air pump outside of your water tank. The second module is a diffuser with a washable filter element placed in your water tank. The ozone generator’s output is fed by tubing to the diffuser, generating millions of ozone-saturated bubbles inside the filter element and released in your drinking water.
How does it work?
As these bubbles rise inside and exit the filter module, the ‘friction’ resulting from them moving through the water draws more than 50,000 litres of water through the filter in 24 hours – removing oxidised particulates, capturing existing debris and preventing it from accumulating on the bottom of the tank. This method of filtering the water before ozonation is key to increasing the ability of the ozone to be absorbed by the water.

Hydrogen Sulfide

An AquaZone Ozone system rapidly oxidises the sulphides in the water to sulphates and keeps the water fresh through constant ozone aeration, removing this offensive gas smell.
pH…
…is the measurement of the acidity or alkalinity of the water. A reading between 6.5 and 8.5 is acceptable for the EPA (US Environmental Protection Agency).
An AquaZone Ozone System will raise a low (acidic) pH of the water if the cause is carbon dioxide gas in the water. The constant aeration of the water removes CO² gases.
Colour
Ozonation, reverse osmosis, chlorination or activated carbon filtration eliminate colour in form of tannins. However, we do not recommend using chlorine as it is considered to create THM (Trihalomethane), a carcinogenic by-product of chlorine.
An AquaZone Ozone system oxidises and removes most tannic substances from your tank water. Unfortunately, some of them are difficult to eliminate with this method. As these tannins are ozone resistant, a different water treatment method needs to be chosen.
Hardness…
…in the form of dissolved calcium, lime and magnesium can reduce the lifespan of your hot water systems. At the same time, it causes an increase in demand for soaps and cleaning agents for everyday domestic tasks. A water softener can remove the hardness by replacing the dissolved minerals with sodium or potassium.
An AquaZone ozone system changes the molecular bonding ability of the hardness constituents. As a result, it reduces the surface tension, and the water feels softer. Additionally, this is an advantage to the initial purpose of the oxidation and filtration capacity of this ozone tank water treatment system.
Turbidity
…of tank water caused by oxidised metals can be easily removed with the AquaZone ozone system. However, the use of sand filters helps to reduce turbidity in the tank water caused by debris, sludge or colloidal clay.
We do not recommend an AquaZone Ozone system for tank water containing large debris, sludge or colloidal clay. If the tank water is too contaminated, the ozone will be diverted from its primary purpose and use all its energy to remove the contaminants.
Minerals
Mineralised water containing sodium, carbonates, chlorides, sulphates, amongst other dissolved solids, can not apply AquaZone Ozone. This mineralised water category can only be eliminated by the chemical process of iron exchange or reverse osmosis technology.
An AquaZone Ozone system will not eliminate dissolved solids in this category.
Bacteria, germs and other pathogens
…like E.Coli Bacteria, Faecal Bacteria, Cryptosporidium, and other primary contaminants in tank water pose a significant health risk.
An AquaZone Ozone system is a tank water treatment but not a complete purification system. If you have a severe pathogen problem, contact Aqua Works as a UV filter may be required also.
