Reverse osmosis water filters for NZ homes
A reverse osmosis (RO) water filter pushes your water through a very fine membrane that holds back what most other filters let through, including PFAS, fluoride, nitrate, lead and dissolved salts. It sits under your kitchen bench and feeds its own drinking water tap.
We supply, install and service RO systems for homes and businesses across Rodney and North Auckland. On town water we already know what’s in it. On bore or surface water we always test first, so you get the system your water needs.
The Ecosoft under-bench RO system we install has six stages: two sediment filters, two carbon filters, the RO membrane and a remineralising filter that puts minerals back into the water. It makes up to 190 litres of drinking water a day.

What reverse osmosis removes
Most of our home customers choose RO to remove fluoride, PFAS or nitrate. Find out more about each one.
Fluoride
Added to many town supplies and found naturally in some bores. It’s the main reason our home customers choose RO.
PFAS
Known as forever chemicals, from firefighting foam and industry. RO is one of the most effective treatments for PFAS.
Nitrate
From fertiliser and septic systems getting into bores, and a growing concern. RO is the treatment we use for nitrate.
Lead and heavy metals
From old pipes, brass fittings and some roofs. RO removes most dissolved lead.
Silica
Common in local bore water and hard on glassware and hot water systems. It’s the main thing we use commercial RO for.
Chlorine taste and smell
The carbon stages remove the chlorine taste and smell from town water.

Is reverse osmosis right for you?
RO treats the water you drink and cook with, at one tap. It’s a good choice when:
- you want fluoride, PFAS or nitrate out of your drinking water
- your bore water has silica, boron or other trace elements that are hard to remove any other way
- you want bottled-quality water for drinking, tea, coffee and baby formula
- you have a water softener and want low-sodium drinking water
RO isn’t the answer to everything. If the problem affects every tap, such as iron staining or hard water, a whole house filter or water softener treats the whole house. On bore or tank water you still need a UV filter to protect every tap from bacteria such as E. coli.

Why we always remineralise RO water
Reverse osmosis works by holding back almost everything dissolved in your water. That’s how it removes fluoride, PFAS and nitrate. But the membrane can’t pick and choose, so it strips out the natural salts and minerals too, including calcium and magnesium. Water straight off the membrane is close to mineral-free. It tastes flat and is slightly acidic.
That’s why every under-bench RO system we install has a remineralising filter as its final stage. It holds calcite, a natural form of calcium carbonate, which puts calcium back into the water and brings the pH back to around neutral before it reaches your tap.
It matters for your health as well as the taste. Calcium and magnesium are essential nutrients, and a World Health Organization report on nutrients in drinking water found that cooking with mineral-free water can draw them out of your food. So we never install an under-bench RO without one.

Reverse osmosis for town, tank and bore water
Every supply is different. Here’s how RO fits each one.
Town water
Council supply
Removes the chlorine taste and smell, fluoride, PFAS and any lead from old pipes. Most homes on town water only need RO at the kitchen tap.
Tank water
Rainwater
We don’t normally recommend RO for rainwater. It’s naturally soft, and a filter and UV system is usually all it needs. We only fit RO on tank water in unusual cases.
Bore and surface water
Groundwater, springs and streams
Can carry nitrate, silica, boron, fluoride or salts. We always test first, then pair RO with any pre-treatment the water needs, like the softener feeding the commercial RO we installed for accommodation villas in Matakana.

What does a reverse osmosis filter remove?
RO removes most dissolved contaminants, including PFAS, fluoride, nitrate, lead and other heavy metals, silica and salts. Its carbon stages also remove the chlorine taste and smell. How much it removes depends on your water.
Does reverse osmosis remove healthy minerals?
Yes. RO removes minerals such as calcium and magnesium along with the contaminants. That’s why every under-bench RO system we install has a remineralising filter as its last stage. It puts calcium back into the water and brings the pH back to around neutral, so your water tastes fresh rather than flat.
Why is it important to remineralise RO water?
Water straight off an RO membrane has almost no minerals left, so it tastes flat and is slightly acidic. Calcium and magnesium are essential nutrients, and a World Health Organization report found that cooking with mineral-free water can draw them out of your food. Remineralising puts calcium back, so you’re not drinking and cooking with mineral-free water every day.
Does a reverse osmosis system waste water?
Yes, some. Depending on the system, it typically sends 2 to 3 litres down the drain for every litre of drinking water it makes. That water carries away what the membrane holds back and keeps the membrane working.
Can I use reverse osmosis on bore or tank water?
On bore and surface water, yes. We always test the water first and add any pre-treatment it needs, such as a softener or pre-filters. The Ecosoft system needs 3 to 6 bar of water pressure, so we check your pump and fit a booster pump if your pressure is low.
We don’t normally recommend RO for tank water. Rainwater is naturally soft, and a filter and UV system is usually all it needs.
Do I still need a UV filter on bore water if I have reverse osmosis?
Yes. RO treats one tap, but bacteria such as E. coli can reach every tap in the house, including the shower. A UV water filter treats all the water coming into the house.
How often does an RO system need servicing?
Once a year. We change the filters, including the remineralising filter, and measure the total dissolved solids (TDS) in your RO water, which tells us how the membrane is doing. On a home system we usually replace the membrane every three years. On commercial systems we test the TDS every six months and replace membranes as needed.
Will reverse osmosis remove fluoride from town water?

Should I get RO or a whole house filter?
It depends on what you want to fix. RO gives you the purest water for drinking and cooking at one tap. A whole house filter treats every tap for things like sediment and chlorine. Many homes have both.
