How a heat pump water heater works

Instead of generating heat directly, a heat pump:

  1. Draws warmth from the surrounding air
  2. Compresses it to increase temperature
  3. Transfers that heat into your water

This process uses significantly less electricity, which is why homeowners see noticeable savings.

FAQs about Econergy Heat Pump Water Heaters

How much can I save with an Econergy heat pump water heater?

Econergy’s tested figure for the HP4000LT is 73.8% less energy a year than an electric hot water cylinder in Zone 5 (the North Island, except the Taupō area), and 71.1% in Zone 6, tested to AS/NZS 4234 and AS/NZS 5125. Your actual savings depend on how much hot water you use, your power prices and your current system.

What guarantee comes with an Econergy heat pump?

For a single family home, Econergy gives a six-year performance guarantee of at least 66% savings compared with a standard electric hot water cylinder, alongside a six-year parts warranty and three years’ labour. Both need the system installed and certified to Econergy’s installation manual, which we do. Commercial installations get two years.

The warranty doesn’t cover damage from hard or corrosive water, so we check your water first. See how your water affects your hot water cylinder.

Can an Econergy heat pump connect to my existing hot water cylinder?

Yes. The HP4000LT and THD3500 are split systems: the heat pump unit connects to your existing cylinder, or to an Econergy heat pump-ready cylinder, with insulated pipes and cables up to 9 metres apart. We check your cylinder is suitable first.

Does an Econergy heat pump work in winter?

Yes. Econergy rates the HP4000LT for air temperatures from -5°C to 40°C. It heats a little slower in colder air: Econergy’s figures show about 60 litres an hour at 12°C and about 75 litres an hour at 20°C. If the air stays below about -4°C, the electric element takes over so you still have hot water.

Can an Econergy system work with tank water or a rural supply?

Yes. The HP4000LT needs at least 50 kPa of water pressure (and no more than 1000 kPa). On tank water we make sure your pump and pressure suit, and that the water is balanced, because hard or corrosive water can damage the heat exchanger and isn’t covered by the warranty.

Where are Econergy heat pumps made?

In Auckland, by Hot Water Heat Pumps Ltd in Henderson. Econergy says each unit is tested through several heating cycles before it leaves the factory.

How long does an Econergy heat pump installation take?

Most Econergy heat pump systems can be installed within one day, depending on where the cylinder is, any electrical or pipework changes, and access to the site.
