Why do I need a Water Safety Plan NZ?
Under the New ZealandWater Services Act (2021), anyone or any business that is more than a single domestic water supplier is considered a commercial water operator. The new water service regulator Taumata Arowai requires certain drinking-water suppliers to draw up a Drinking Water Safety Plan NZ (WSP) for their water supply. It is a critical tool in ensuring safe drinking water in New Zealand.
First of all, the water safety plan is a legal requirement. But more important, it primarily provides you with an overview of what to do in emergencies. Thus, it is an essential guideline for managing the event. There are various objectives of a water safety plan. First, it identifies health hazards and risks that may occur from the Point of Entry (POE) to the Point of Use (POU) in your water system. Second, it helps to comply with legal limits to take measures when a critical point is reached.
How do I know that I need a water safety plan?
Suppose you are rural and on rainwater or bore water. And you are considered a small drinking water supplies under the New Zealand Water Services Act (2021). In this case, you must submit a water safety plan. This also applies if your business involves food production, such as a winery, distillery or dairy.
However, this legal requirement of providing a drinking water safety plan also affects you when you are on mains water. And you have issues with chlorine/chemicals in your provided potable water for your customers. As soon as you are considered commercial like a café/restaurant, self-supplying rural school or campground, you will need to complete a water safety plan to comply with the Water Services Act.
