AquaZone ozone tank water treatment is a smart alternative to UV water filtration
Ozone tank water treatment is a powerful and effective alternative to traditional UV (ultraviolet) water filtration. While UV filter systems use ultraviolet light to kill bacteria and viruses as water passes through a chamber, they disinfect the water at that exact time and point. On the other hand, ozone is a gas injected into your tank water. Thus, it works as a disinfectant throughout the entire tank. It kills many microorganisms, breaks down harmful chemicals, and even removes bad tastes and smells—something UV can't do. If you want tasty drinking water, you need to add an activated carbon Filter to your existing UV water filtration system. Additionally, ozone naturally turns back into oxygen after it does its job, leaving no chemicals behind. Therefore, Ozone offers a smart and safe alternative to UV water disinfection for anyone seeking a more comprehensive water treatment solution.

From contaminated to safe drinking water: How ozone water treatment works?
What is Ozone water treatment?
Ozone water treatment is a way of cleaning water using ozone gas, a special form of oxygen. When added to water, ozone reacts with and destroys pathogens like bacteria, viruses, parasites and other harmful germs. Moreover, it also helps remove bad smells, unpleasant tastes, and certain chemicals in the water. Additionally, one of the great things about ozone is that it works quickly and doesn’t leave any chemicals behind—it simply turns back into oxygen after doing its job. Thus, it is a safe, powerful, and eco-friendly way to clean your water.
How does Ozone tank water treatment work?
Ozone tank water treatment works by creating ozone gas (O₃) and dissolving it into your tank water, where it reacts with and destroys harmful contaminants. Ozone is made from oxygen (O₂). When energy, like electricity or UV light, passes through air, it splits oxygen molecules into single atoms. These atoms quickly join up with regular oxygen molecules to form ozone, which has three oxygen atoms instead of two.
Once ozone is added to water, a process called oxidation starts. This means it reacts with anything in the water that can be broken down, like bacteria, viruses, algae, fungi, and even things like iron, sulfur, or organic waste. When ozone touches these substances, it attacks and breaks them apart at the molecular level. The reaction kills microorganisms and causes particles to clump together, making them easier to catch in your filter system.
After cleaning, ozone doesn’t leave any chemicals or residues behind. It simply loses its extra oxygen atom and turns back into regular oxygen. Consequently, ozone tank water treatment is a natural, powerful, and environmentally friendly way to purify your tank water.
Perfect matches: Various water sources and one solution, ozone tank water disinfection
Ozone tank water treatment is versatile and suitable for a wide range of water sources because of its powerful disinfection and oxidation capabilities.
Rainwater tanks
Contaminants often enter your water long before it reaches the tank. Rainwater collects contaminants as it runs off your roof—bird droppings, spray drift, dust, and dead insects are common. Next, it flows through gutters full of leaves, twigs, and rodent droppings, picking up organic matter that ends up in your tank. Over time, this can cause bad smells, discolouration (from tannins), and bacterial growth.
In response, ozone treatment disinfects the entire tank, breaking down pathogens and organic contaminants. It removes odours, tannins, and biofilm, leaving your rainwater fresh, safe, and chemical-free.
Bore / spring water
Groundwater drawn from bores, wells, or springs often contains iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide, which can cause metallic tastes, orange staining, and a rotten egg smell. Additionally, it may also carry bacteria, parasites, and organic matter from the soil or old plumbing systems, especially in shallow or poorly sealed bores.
Fortunately, ozone treatment oxidises these metals, making them easy to filter out, and breaks down sulphur compounds and microbial contaminants. As a result, you get cleaner, clearer, and better-tasting water—naturally purified without the need for added chemicals.
Catered drinking water
Catered water—delivered by tanker and filled into your storage tank—can carry unexpected risks. For example, if the tanker isn’t properly cleaned, it may introduce bacteria, sediment, or chemical residues into your system. Contamination can also occur during transfer, especially if hoses or fittings are unclean or exposed to dust, insects, or animal droppings. Once inside the tank, any existing organic matter or biofilm can react with the new water, further affecting quality. That’s why post-fill ozone treatment is a smart step to ensure your catered water is safe, clean, and ready to use.
Different water sources need different solutions—let’s find yours.
Whether you are using rainwater, bore water, spring water, or catered tank deliveries, each supply has its own challenges. Ozone may be the perfect fit—or part of a customised system just for you. Bacteria and viruses
Ozone kills harmful microorganisms like E. coli, Giardia, and Cryptosporidium, which can cause illness.
Algae, mould, yeast spores and fungi
It oxidises and breaks down spores and growths that affect water clarity, taste, and safety.
Parasites and cysts
Ozone destroys tough-to-kill cysts (like Giardia and Cryptosporidium) that often survive traditional disinfection methods.
Odours and bad tastes
It removes foul smells and unpleasant tastes caused by organic material, hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg smell), and other dissolved compounds.
Iron and manganese
Ozone oxidises dissolved metals, turning them into solid particles that can be easily filtered out, helping to reduce staining and metallic tastes.
Hydrogen sulfide
Common in bore water, this gas causes a rotten egg smell—ozone breaks it down quickly and effectively.
Chloramines and organic chemicals
It helps break down chemical byproducts from other treatments (like chlorine) and removes pesticides, herbicides, and industrial pollutants.
Spray drift contaminants (e.g. Glyphosate and Pesticides)
Ozone oxidises and neutralises agricultural runoff chemicals like glyphosate and other common pesticides, which can drift into water sources from nearby spraying.
Biofilm in water tanks and pipes
Ozone penetrates and breaks down biofilm—a slimy buildup of bacteria and fungi on surfaces—while helping prevent it from forming again.
Clean, powerful, and gentle on your health: Ozone can replace chlorine tank water treatment
While chlorine has long been used for water disinfection, it often leaves behind unpleasant smells, chemical taste, and skin or eye irritation. Even more concerning, it can form harmful by-products like trihalomethanes (THMs) when reacting with organic matter.
In contrast, ozone offers a more innovative, safer solution. It’s one of the most powerful oxidisers on Earth—55 times more effective than chlorine and up to 3,000 times faster at killing bacteria and viruses. Unlike chlorine, ozone leaves no chemical residue, requires no ongoing chemical dosing, and won’t affect the taste or feel of your water. By switching to ozone, you get crystal-clear, odour-free, and chemical-free water—without the risks or maintenance that come with chlorine. It’s a cleaner, more advanced way to protect your tank water supply.

Steve's Pros & Cons
Pros of Aquazone Ozone Tank Water Treatment
Ozone Tank Water Treatment improves smell, taste & safety
This tank water filtration greatly improves the overall quality of tank water, especially when it comes to smell and taste. We’ve installed over 20 in the last 18 months, and the feedback’s been consistent: people immediately notice the difference. Ozone helps strip out that musty or metallic taste you sometimes get with stored rainwater, and the odours are gone within hours.
Furthermore, it’s also effective at removing things like iron and manganese, which can cause staining and give the water a dirty or earthy flavour. Moreover, because ozone destroys bacteria, mould, viruses, algae, and even contaminants from spray drift, there’s a noticeable boost in how clean the water feels across the board. Surprisingly, most people don’t expect their tank water to taste that good, but it really does after the TankOzone water filter system has done its job.
Natural water filtration using only air and electricity
Another significant benefit of the AquaZone Ozone Tank Water Filter System is its simplicity and nature — it runs entirely on air and electricity, with no chemical dosing or additives needed. As a result, it’s an appealing option for people trying to avoid chlorine or not wanting synthetic treatments in their water.
Additionally, this chemical-free ozone water filtration helps keep the tank supply fresh while it’s being stored. The oxygenation effect from the ozone keeps the water from going stale and can help reduce that ‘flat’ taste you sometimes get in older rainwater tanks. It’s a clean, quiet system that gets on with the job, and customers like knowing their water hasn’t been treated with anything harsh.
Tough water ? This ozone tank water treatment doesn’t back down
What stands out is how well this system handles the tough stuff. We have put it into some challenging setups — older tanks with years of buildup, awkward pipe layouts, and places with much fine sediment — and it just works. You don’t need perfect plumbing or crystal-clear water for this thing to do its job.
What helps is that ozone keeps working no matter the conditions. Where other systems might lose efficiency in colder temps or when the water is slightly off, this rural tank water filter holds steady. In addition, it also helps improve clarity and reduce staining by lowering iron and mineral buildup over time. Customers with tricky water always tell us their sinks and taps look cleaner, and that the water feels better daily. Because if this, it’s become a great go-to option for us when the tank setup is less than ideal.
No more stale tank water with ozone purification water treatment system
What’s great about this system is that it doesn’t just sit back and wait — it actively keeps the tank fresh by pushing ozone-rich air through the water. That’s because constant oxygenation helps stop things like stagnation, slimy biofilm, and even mosquito larvae from getting a foothold.
As a result, we’ve seen tanks stay in better shape for longer, even in dry spells when water isn’t moving much. The ozone helps keep the whole house water filter system healthier, right from inside the tank — not just at the tap. You end up with safe drinking water that doesn’t go stale and doesn’t need constant attention to stay that way.

A top choice for rainwater harvesting in NZ
To be honest, this is the system I often recommend for rainwater harvesting, especially for customers who want a low-maintenance, chemical-free setup. After a solid UV system, this is my next pick. It works well across different tank types and handles New Zealand’s variable conditions better than most.
We have worked with many tank water setups over the years, and what I like about this ozone system is that it ticks all the boxes: it’s reliable, natural, and doesn’t need constant tweaking. Whether you are new to tank water or upgrading an older system, it is a solid choice for getting potable water from the roof to the tap.

Cons of Aquazone Ozone Tank Water Treatment
TankOzone tank water filtration system needs a stable power supply
One thing to be aware of with this ozone water filtration system is that it relies on electricity. The ozone generator needs to run regularly to keep the tank treated — it pushes ozone into the water through a diffuser, and that process depends on a power supply. While it doesn’t use much power, it does need to stay on.
For homes connected to the grid, this is rarely an issue. However, it’s something to think about for remote properties or off-grid setups. If the power goes out, ozone production stops, which means the system can’t treat the water until power returns. There’s no backup mode or battery option — it’s either running or not.
That said, we’ve had customers with solar setups run these just fine, but thankfully they usually have battery storage to keep them stable. So, if your property experiences regular outages or relies on a basic off-grid system, this tank water filtration system might not be the best standalone solution, or it may need to be paired with something more manual as a backup.
A small but regular job that keeps your water system running smoothly
The system’s in-tank filter does need a bit of upkeep. It is not complicated — just a rinse — but you’ll want to keep it on your radar. How often depends on your water source. In most setups, every 4 to 8 weeks is enough, but it might need more attention if you have much fine sediment from roof runoff or a bore.
The good news is that the cleaning is quick — usually just a matter of lifting the filter and giving it a hose-down. No tools, no parts to replace. But like any part of your water system, leaving it too long can reduce performance. We always tell customers: set a reminder, check it every month or so, and you’ll stay ahead of any buildup.
Best for rainwater tanks — not for inline or pressure systems
The AquaZone Ozone Tank Water Filter System is made to treat stored water, not water running under pressure. That means it is an excellent fit for homes using rainwater tanks, but it is not designed for inline filtration setups or systems that only use pressurised supply without storage.
This system works by bubbling ozone through standing water over time, so ozone won’t get the contact time it needs if your setup relies solely on pumps, pressure tanks, or instant-on demand. You’d be better off with a UV system or another inline solution in those cases.
However, if you’re on a rainwater harvesting system — or managing rural tank water from a spring, bore, or catered supply — this filter works exactly where needed. That’s where it does its best work: inside the tank, treating the whole volume before it even hits the tap.
Ozone tank water treatment may need UV backup for protozoa
While ozone is highly effective at killing bacteria, viruses, and other common contaminants, it isn’t always a complete solution. Especially for water supplies where protozoa like Giardia or Cryptosporidium are a concern, we often recommend pairing the ozone tank water system with a UV water filter for added protection.
Ozone works best when it has time to circulate in the tank and react with contaminants. But protozoa can be tough — they are more resistant and may require that extra disinfection step. That is why we usually suggest a combined approach in high-risk areas or for households pulling from uncertain sources like surface water, shallow bores, or springs.
It is not a drawback — just part of building a treatment setup that suits your specific water supply. And when used together, a water tank ozone filtration system and UV filter cover nearly everything. Talk to our water filtration experts on 0800 278 296.
