New Zealand Drinking Water Regulations & Legal Requirements

New Zealand drinking water regulations are national laws and standards that set safety requirements for how drinking water must be supplied, tested and monitored to protect public health. These regulations are established under the Water Services Act 2021 and the Drinking Water Standards for New Zealand, which set maximum acceptable values (MAVs) for contaminants in drinking water supplies.

Yes. Under the Water Services Act 2021, if you supply drinking water to anyone outside your own household, you may be legally classified as a drinking water supplier and must comply with national drinking water regulations. This includes businesses such as cafés, accommodation providers, schools, marae, farms with staff facilities, or properties supplying water to multiple households. A single home supplying water only to its own household is generally considered a domestic self-supply and is not subject to the same regulatory requirements.
