A simple tank gauge for the house tank, on your phone
If your water tank is close to the house, you don't need a mobile network to keep an eye on it. The HiLo WiFi Water Tank Monitor sits on the tank roof, measures the water level with radar, and sends the reading through your home Wi-Fi to the free HiLo app. HiLo recommends it for household tanks.
There's no annual fee: it uses the Wi-Fi you already have. No more lifting the lid, tapping the side of the tank or guessing how long the water will last.
HiLo is developed in New Zealand by HiLo Level Monitoring (formerly Waterwatch).
Wi-Fi or 4G: which HiLo suits you?
HiLo makes the same radar tank monitor in two versions. The difference is how it sends the readings.
- HiLo WiFi (this one): for tanks within reach of your home Wi-Fi. No annual fee. A good fit for most houses on tank water.
- HiLo 4G Cellular: for tanks out of Wi-Fi range, such as farm and stock tanks, baches and lifestyle blocks. It uses the Spark or One NZ mobile network and needs an annual HiLo subscription.
Not sure your Wi-Fi reaches the tank? Stand at the tank with your phone on your home Wi-Fi. If the signal is weak or drops out, the 4G version is the safer choice. Ask us and we'll help you pick.
Accurate radar, nothing in the water
The HiLo uses industrial-grade radar to measure from the top of the tank down to the water. HiLo quotes an accuracy of 0.2%. Nothing touches the water, so there's no float or probe to rust, block or wear out, and nothing extra inside your drinking water tank. Enter your tank's size or volume in the app and it shows how full the tank is.
Alarms before you run out
Set tank level alarms in the HiLo app and it lets you know when the water gets low, or when the level is falling quickly. A fast drop often means a leak, a burst pipe or a tap left running. The app is free to use. If you want extra insights and more alerts, HiLo offers an optional premium version of the app.
Built for life on a tank roof
The monitor is industrial grade and made to handle the weather: IP68 waterproof, UV resistant, and tested to military standards according to HiLo. It runs on one replaceable battery with a life expectancy of more than 5 years, and the app warns you when the battery is getting low. When it's time, a genuine HiLo replacement battery takes a few minutes to fit.

Installing the HiLo WiFi monitor
HiLo designed it for DIY installation. You drill a small hole in the tank roof for the radar to see through, screw the monitor down, and the HiLo app's setup wizard connects to it over Bluetooth and walks you through the rest. Take your Wi-Fi password to the tank with you, because you connect the monitor to your Wi-Fi during setup.
- Hole: 50 to 60 mm. A hole saw works on plastic tanks. Concrete tanks need a diamond core drill.
- Height: at least 300 mm above the highest water level.
- Level: within 3 degrees of level. On sloping roofs, a HiLo levelling shim kit brings it level.
- Position: clear of ball cocks and inlet and outlet pipes. Devan tanks need the monitor off-centre, because metal in the centre interferes with the radar.
Want us to install it?
Our team installs tank monitors across Rodney and North Auckland, from Mangawhai to Albany. We'll check your Wi-Fi reaches the tank, pick the right spot on the roof, drill and mount the monitor (diamond core drilling on concrete tanks), connect it to your Wi-Fi, set up the HiLo app and alarms on your phone, and check the first readings before we leave. We can also fit one when we install a new water tank or service your UV system or pump.

HiLo WiFi tank monitor: frequently asked questions
Is there an annual fee?
No. The WiFi version uses your home Wi-Fi, so there's no annual fee. The HiLo app is free, with an optional premium upgrade if you want extra insights and more alerts.
What if my Wi-Fi doesn't reach the tank?
Then the HiLo 4G Cellular Water Tank Monitor is the better choice. It uses the mobile network instead, so it works wherever there's 4G coverage.
Will it work on my tank?
It works on plastic and concrete tanks. The radar reads from 0.2 m to 3.5 m below the sensor, which suits most household tanks. Send us a photo of your tank if you're unsure.
Can I install it myself?
Yes, it's designed for DIY installation and the app guides you through it. You'll need a drill, and a diamond core drill on a concrete tank. If you'd rather we did it, call us on 0800 278 296.
Is it in stock?
The WiFi monitor is out of stock with HiLo at the moment, with more on the way. You can still order it from us and we'll supply it as soon as stock arrives. Call us if you'd like to know the timing.
