Why your HiLo tank monitor needs to sit level
A HiLo tank monitor uses radar to measure the distance down to the water. For accurate readings the sensor has to point straight down: HiLo's installation guide says it should sit as level as possible, at no more than a 3 degree angle. On a flat tank roof that's easy. On a sloping roof it isn't, and a tilted monitor can give poor readings.
The HiLo levelling shim kit fixes that. It's a pack of three angled shims, each 4 degrees, that sit under the monitor's base to bring it back to level. HiLo's box says it's for sloping installations.
Which tanks need levelling shims?
- Concrete tanks: HiLo's standard method is to mount the monitor high on the roof but off-centre, levelled with shims.
- Steel tanks: HiLo lists steel tanks among the sloping surfaces the shims are made for.
- Plastic tanks with internal steel: some plastic tanks, including Devan tanks, have metal in the centre that interferes with the radar. The monitor goes off-centre, where the roof slopes, so it needs shims.
- Plastic tanks with a curved top: shims let you level the monitor where the roof isn't flat.
Stackable to suit the slope
The shims stack, so you can use one, two or all three to match the slope of your tank roof. Check the monitor is level before you fix it down, and keep the area under the sensor clear of ball cocks and inlet and outlet pipes.
The shims fit the HiLo 4G Cellular Water Tank Monitor, the HiLo Wi-Fi model and earlier Waterwatch tank monitors.
Want us to install your HiLo?
We install HiLo tank monitors across Rodney and North Auckland, from Mangawhai to Albany. We'll pick the right spot on the roof, drill the hole (diamond core drilling on concrete tanks), level the monitor, set up the HiLo app and alerts on your phone, and check the first readings. If your tank needs shims, we'll tell you before we start.

HiLo levelling shims: frequently asked questions
How many shims are in the kit?
Three. Each one is angled at 4 degrees, and they can be stacked.
Do I need shims on a plastic tank?
Not usually, if you can mount the monitor on a flat part of the roof. You'll need them if the monitor has to go off-centre on a sloping or curved roof, for example on a Devan tank.
Do they fit my Waterwatch monitor?
Yes. HiLo says the shims are also compatible with Waterwatch tank monitors.
