Water tank solutions across Warkworth and the Mahurangi area
Water needs can change quickly once you move beyond Warkworth township. While a tank in town may provide useful rainwater storage for gardens and outdoor use, lifestyle and rural properties around the wider Mahurangi area can depend much more heavily on the water they collect and store.
Around Snells Beach, Algies Bay and Sandspit, properties range from established residential homes to larger sections and lifestyle properties. Each property uses different opportunities for collecting and storing rainwater. Further out towards Mahurangi East/ West, adequate storage becomes increasingly important where homes rely on their own water supply. Lifestyle blocks, gardens, lifestock or additional buildings need an adequate water supply.
We also work throughout the rural areas surrounding Warkworth and south towards Puhoi, where tank water is common on properties outside the reticulated network. In these situations, simply installing the biggest tank that fits isn’t always the answer. Roof catchment, available storage, pumps, plumbing and UV water treatment all need to work together.
Being based in Warkworth means Aqua Works understands the mix of town, coastal and rural properties across the area and can recommend a tank setup based on how your property actually uses water.

Water tank replacement by helicopter with Skywork
This Snells Beach property had an older plastic water tank tucked into a confined area at the back of the garden. Over time, heavy vegetation had grown across the tank and placed significant pressure on the roof structure. Internal supports had failed, leaving the tank badly deformed and no longer structurally safe. Further damage to the roof increased the risk of the tank eventually splitting or collapsing.
As this was an insurance claim, Aqua Works managed the project from start to finish, including assessing the damage, determining what was required and coordinating the replacement with the insurer.
Access was one of the biggest challenges. There was not enough room to simply remove the old tank and bring a replacement in by conventional means. Our team cut the damaged tank into sections and removed it piece by piece, before using our compact digger to prepare a stable base for the new tank.
For the replacement, we coordinated with local helicopter operator Skyworks to lift the new plastic water tank over the property and lower it directly onto the prepared site. Once the new tank was safely positioned, our plumbers completed the pipework and connected it back into the property’s water system. We also arranged the initial water delivery with Matakana Water, so the new tank could be filled and the household’s water supply restored.
The damaged water tank
Heavy vegetation had put pressure on the tank, damaging its internal supports and causing the roof and tank structure to collapse.
Removing the old plastic tank
With very limited access to the backyard, our team cut the damaged tank into manageable sections so it could be safely removed from the property.
Preparing the site
Once the old tank was gone, we used our compact digger to clear and prepare the site, creating a stable base for the replacement tank
The new Devan tank arrives
With conventional access impossible, we coordinated with local helicopter operator Skyworks to lift the new plastic water tank into the property.
Tank placement by helicopter
The replacement tank was carefully lowered into position on the newly prepared base, ready for connection to the existing water system.
Filling the new tank
Once the installation was complete, we arranged for Matakana Water to fill the new tank. So, we get the property’s water supply back up and running.

FAQ about Water Tank Installation Warkworth
What size water tank do I need in Warkworth?
There is no single tank size that suits every Warkworth property. The right capacity depends on your roof catchment, household size, daily water use, available space and whether rainwater is your main supply or supplementary storage.
For rural homes and lifestyle properties relying primarily on rainwater, we generally look at the complete water balance rather than simply recommending the largest tank available.
Is it better to add a second water tank or replace my existing tank with a bigger one?
If your existing tank is still in good condition, adding a second tank is often an effective way to substantially increase storage without replacing infrastructure that still works.
The best option depends on available space, roof catchment, tank levels, plumbing and how the tanks can be connected. We assess the existing system first and recommend whether additional storage or replacement makes more sense.
Can I install a rainwater tank in Warkworth if my house is on mains water?
Yes. Rainwater storage can still be useful for Warkworth properties connected to mains water, particularly for garden watering and other outdoor uses.
Rainwater can also be used for certain indoor purposes, but connecting a rainwater system to internal household plumbing introduces additional plumbing and consent requirements.
Do I need consent to install a water tank in Warkworth?
It depends on the tank, where it is positioned and how the water will be used. Many straightforward rainwater tanks used only for outdoor purposes can be installed without building consent, provided the relevant requirements are met.
A tank connected to internal household plumbing will generally require building consent, and site-specific planning or resource consent requirements can also apply. We can help identify what needs to be checked for your installation.
Can you replace an old water tank without replacing my whole water system?
Often, yes. If the existing pump, plumbing and water treatment equipment are suitable and in good condition, a replacement tank can usually be integrated with them.
Before replacing the tank, we check the existing setup, tank base and connections. It is also a good opportunity to make sure the storage capacity still matches the property’s current water needs.
Will adding another tank mean I need a bigger water pump?
Not necessarily. Adding storage does not automatically mean the pump needs replacing.
What matters is how the tanks are connected, where the pump is positioned and whether the existing pump can provide the pressure and flow required by the property. We check the pump as part of assessing how the additional tank should be integrated.
How do I know if my Warkworth property has enough rainwater storage?
Running low on water isn’t always caused by having too small a tank. Available roof catchment, household consumption, leaks, pump problems and how effectively rainfall reaches the tanks can all affect your usable water supply.
If you’re regularly running short or relying on water deliveries, it is worth assessing the complete system before simply adding more storage.
